Seasonal Population Estimates. 2022

In 2022, out of the 474 municipalities for which results are provided, in 164 of them the seasonal population was positive, i.e., it was higher than the registered population. In 309 municipalities the seasonal population was negative and in one municipality the balance was zero.

In El Port de la Selva the seasonal population was the annual full-time equivalent (AFTE) of 2,075 people, a value that represents 204.4% of the population registered there (1,015 inhabitants). It is followed by Pals, with an increase in the registered population of 151.7%, and Santa Susanna, with 130.7%. Sant Julià del Llor and Bonmatí (−17.1%), Almoster (−16.2%) and Sant Climent de Llobregat (−15.3%) are notable among the municipalities where the seasonal population is negative and, therefore, the population actually present in the municipality is lower than the registered one.

In absolute terms, Barcelona is the municipality in Catalonia with the highest seasonal population (AFTE population of 74,457). Salou (27,857) and Lloret de Mar (16,899) also stand out. On the other hand, the municipalities with the highest negative seasonal population are L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (AFTE population of −16,120), Badalona (−15,866) and Sabadell (−13,472).

The counties with the highest seasonal population in relative terms are El Pallars Sobirà (46.4%) and Aran (39.0%). On the other hand, L'Anoia (−5.7%) and El Baix Llobregat (−4.3%) are the counties with the lowest seasonal population.

El Tarragonès is the county with the highest seasonal population in absolute terms (AFTE population of 55,644), followed by El Baix Empordà (46,380) and L'Alt Empordà (36,313). By contrast, El Baix Llobregat (−35,568), El Vallès Occidental (−30,372) and El Vallès Oriental (−17,724) stand out among the 19 counties with negative seasonal population.

In 2022, Idescat improved the estimate of the seasonal population. The territorial disaggregation was expanded to offer results for all municipalities with 1,000 inhabitants and over (either registered or AFTE population). An estimate of overnight stays in tourist accommodations and an estimate of hikers for tourist purposes have been added. A new base 2021 has been established to collect these methodological changes.
