This dossier presents a set of indicators with respect to social protection. It shows data on expenditure on social protection with respect to GDP, the distribution of expenses by functions, social protection accounts in terms of income and expenditure, and a comparison between expenditure per inhabitant on benefits and the contributions made by public administrations to the finance of social protection in the areas of Catalonia, Spain and the European Union.
Social protection is the set of actions that tend to cover the population's social risks or needs. These actions require a large amount of economic resources that make up almost a fifth of the entire economy.
Since 1991, Idescat has produced Social protection accounts in Catalonia by applying the methodological criteria of the European system of integrated social protection (SEEPROS), which is a guarantee of a high level of international comparability between data.
