This dossier provides insight on nuptiality and is based on information on natural population movements, in terms of marriage. It establishes, for instance, that in 2009 the number of marriages dropped by 10%, that 74% of marriages are civil; that the age difference between people getting married is decreasing and that the rate of second marriages has increased, reaching 28% of total marriages.
This marriage data is part of the statistics on natural population movements. They are based on the forms filled out by citizens when registering their marriage in the Civil Registry. Natural population movements is one of the oldest statistics. There is information dating back to 1858, which facilitates the study of demographic dynamics from then until the present. Collaboration agreements between Idescat and the INE have made it possible for us to publish these statistics on Catalonia from 1985 onward, thus improving their thoroughness and territorial disaggregation.
