Methodological note

The quotient between the average population of a territory on a given date compared to the size of the territory.

The average population during a calendar year is generally calculated as the arithmetic mean of the population on 1st January of two consecutive years. However, some countries use the population based on registers or estimate it on a date close to 1st July.
