Methodological note

Short-term fertility indicator (number of children per woman) is calculated from the addition of the fertility rates by age group and represents the number of children that one generation of mothers would have if the fertility rates per age group observed at any given time were to hold steady. The number of children actually birthed by generations of women fluctuates less than that calculated based on the conjunctive indicator, which is less sensitive to changes in the fertility "calendar": a rejuvenation of the mean age of mothers translates into a sizeable jump in the indicator, while a delay in this mean translates into a sharp decline in the indicator.

The average maternity age for giving birth is the average age for giving birth weighted by the rates of each age. The numerator is calculated as the sum of the product of each age multiplied by the fertility rate. The denominator consists of the sum of the rates.

The proportion of Children born outside marriage is the ratio between the live births from unmarried women and the total number of live births. It is expressed as a percentage.

The fertility general rate is the relation between the number of live births per 1,000 women of fertile age (between 15 and 49).

As of 2012, the statistics on fertility include births by mothers residing in Catalonia which take place in other autonomous communities.

As of 2012, the data is reported annually in two phases: the provisional data, based on events concerning residents registered with civil registries of Catalonia, and the definitive data, with events concerning all residents, including those registered with civil registries in other autonomous communities.

The information on the indicators of natural movement and migration from the first decade of the 21st century were updated in September 2013 with the availability of the 2001–2011 intercensal population estimates, which links the results of the 2001 Population Census and the 2011 Population Estimates.
