Methodological note

The Statistics on Annulments, Separations and Divorces is an annual statistics research aimed at the study of legally filed annulment, separation or divorce proceedings.

The objective of these statistics is to determine the number of settlements issued on annulments, separations and divorces in the course of a given year, and provide information on some of the main sociodemographic characteristics of the spouses (sex, age, nationality, number of children), the types of separation or divorce (by consent or contentious divorce) and other related social variables involving the judicial process (alimony, custody, duration of the proceedings, etc.).

The basic unit of the statistics is the annulment, separation or divorce settlement issued by the corresponding judicial body.

The period of reference is the calendar year, using the date of the delivery of each settlement. The information is obtained on a continual basis during the same period of reference (year t) and the first four months of the following year (year t+1). The data is published yearly.

The statistics gather information for Catalonia and the four provinces.
