EUT

These statistics have a specific section with all the information available: Survey on the Use of Time (EUT).

Methodological note

The Survey on the Use of Time is a survey targeted at the population aged 10 and over, gathering information on the daily activities of the population over a period of twelve months, doing so through a personal activity log, a household questionnaire and an individual questionnaire.

Two editions of the Survey on the Use of Time have been taken in Catalonia, one panning the years 2002 and 2003 and carried out by the INE under agreement with Idescat, and the 2010–2011 edition, which was carried out by Idescat.

The production and design of the Survey on the Use of Time project was executed in accordance with the current directives issued by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) for the project of standardised European surveys on the use of time. This ensured the comparability of the results both at a national and international level.

In the 2002–2003 edition, the household sample proposed by the INE was expanded under the collaboration agreement with Idescat. Idescat performed the data treatment on the findings of the Survey on the Use of Time for Catalonia based on the fieldwork data carried out by the INE. The sample expanded to Catalonia consisted of 3,362 households in Catalonia and 23,880 across Spain. In the 2010–2011 edition, Idescat decided to make its own survey, with a household sample of 3,248 households.

The main aim of the Survey on the Use of Time is to obtain first-hand data on the scope of unpaid work taking place in the household, the distribution of responsibilities among the family members living there, the participation of the population in cultural and leisure activities, and the use of time of specific social groups (young people, the unemployed, seniors, etc.), all for the purpose of being able to formulate family-oriented and gender-equal policies, and estimate the satellite accounts of the household sector.

The following indicators of the Survey on the Use of Time are obtained from the activities being done and the time devoted to them, which are collected in the activity log, a collection tool particular to the SURVEY ON THE USE OF TIME:

  • Social Time or the average duration of the activities on a normal day. This indicator corresponds to the average time per day devoted to an activity of the entire population, including those who do not do this activity.
  • Participation and Average Duration of the activities on a normal day. The average duration of this indicator is the time devoted to an activity by some of the people who do it.
  • Schedule of Activities: The population that does the same activity at the start of each hour, which also refers to the rhythms of daily activity.

The classification of activities using one and two digits of disaggregation also adheres to Eurostat directives and the latest version is as follows:

  • Other personal care

Media:

  • Watching TV, videos or DVDs Listening to the radio or recordings

Travelling and non-specified use of time: The travelling accounted for refers strictly to that done other than for strolling purposes. It also include activities that cannot be classified in other sections.

This classification of activities is slightly different than the one used in the 2003 edition. For example, the primary jobs and second jobs have been grouped into a single category, and IT has become its own category, when it was previous included under games and hobbies.

The average duration of the activities carried out in the tables in the Social Time section should total 24:00 hours, but there may be slight differences as the seconds have been truncated; it was decided to maintain the numbers as is, rather than rounding them or making it balance out. Should the information with the seconds and second decimals be required, a customised order may be placed through the helpdesk via our website.
