Methodological note

Cumulative Annual Highest Daily Maximum 8-Hour Ozone Concentration : Concentration accumulated during a given year of the maximum 8-hour averages for every day that the total exceeds 70 micrograms of ozone per cubic meter of air in the background stations within urban agglomerations.

A background station is that which is not directly influenced by emissions from nearby sources and is thus representative of an extensive area. In the case of stations located in urban areas, they are representative of a surrounding area covering several square kilometers.

Calculation: for each station, the running 8-hour averages are calculated for the entire year, with the daily maximums being selected. Of these maximums (one per day), only those exceeding 70 micrograms per cubic meter are selected; this value is then subtracted from them and the result is added up for the entire year. If less than 100% of the year's data is available, then a correction must be made. This index is merely representative and thus is calculated if the amount of valid data available constitutes at least 75%.

Finally, if more than one background measurement site is available, the index given for a region is the average of the index calculated for each site weighted by the population of the agglomeration that each site belongs to.

Concentration of Suspended Particles with a Diameter Under 10 Microns (PM10): Concentration of the particles with a diameter of 10 microns or less on annual average at background measurement sites in urban agglomerations. Therefore it is the average concentration that the population in urban agglomerations is exposed to.

Calculation: calculation is made for the annual average of PM10 concentration for each background measurement site within each of Catalonia's urban agglomerations. If more than one background measurement site is available, then the index given for a region is the average of the index calculated for each site weighted by the population of the associated agglomeration.
