The population employed in the tourism sector in Catalonia was 431,300 in the third quarter of 2016, some 6.1% higher than the same quarter of 2015, according to the Active Population Survey. The population employed in this sector represents around 13.4% of total employment. By sex, the tourism sector employed 240,000 men and 191,300 women. The tourism sector in Spain employed a total of 2,575,800 people, which was 4.8% higher than one year ago, and represents 13.9% of total employment.
The Active population survey is a set of sample based statistics of continuous character that carries out the INE with quarterly periodicity for all the Spanish territory, the main aim of which is to find out the relationship with the economic activity of the population.
