In the 2014–2015 academic year, 11.8% (22,681) of the 191,547 students enrolled at in-class university education centres in Catalonia lived outside Catalonia. Approximately half the university students living outside Catalonia (50.2%) studied in El Barcelonès.
74.1% of the 156,499 university students living in Catalonia travelled from their municipalities of residence to one of the 23 municipalities where the university education centres are located.
With respect to the areas of the Territorial Plan, there is a significant variation in the percentages of students who studied in the same area of the Territorial Plan as they lived in. Thus, most of the students living in the Metropolitan area (94.4%) studied in the same area as they lived in. The students living in El Camp de Tarragona (68.7%), Ponent (61%) and the Girona Counties (59.8%) were in an intermediate situation. Finally, the percentages of students who studied in the same area as they lived in were lower among the students living in the Central Counties (28.4%), El Penedès (7.8%) and Les Terres de l'Ebre (2.7%). In L'Alt Pirineu i Aran there is no university education centre and the 1,082 university students who lived there had to travel outside the area to study.
The Statistics on Commuting for Study Reasons analyse the journeys made by students between the place of residence and the place of study, on the basis of enrolments registered by the Ministry of Business and Knowledge's Secretariat for Universities and Research. The treatment of this administrative record of enrolments enabled Idescat to produce a new annual statistical series on journeys for study reasons by university students, which starts with data for the 2011-2012 academic year. The data presented refers to students enrolled in Catalonia, whether they reside there or not.
The Statistics on the obligatory mobility for study reasons of university students are published by place of residence, place of study and sex. The territorial disaggregation is by municipalities, counties, areas of the Territorial Plan, provinces and Catalonia.
