Parliament has passed the Law on the Statistical Plan for Catalonia 2017-2020 and amends the Law 23/1998, dated 30th December 1998, on statistics in Catalonia

12.22.2016

The Catalan Parliament passed the Law on the Statistical Plan for Catalonia 2017-2020 (PEC 2017-2020) on the 22th December. The Plan is the instrument that will govern and plan statistics of interest to the Government of Catalonia over the next four years.

This new Plan is inspired by the different European regulations covering European statistics, and adopts all the principles of the European Statistics Code of Practice. In this regard, the Plan introduces the guidelines for producing and publishing statistics from the most developed countries in our vicinity.

The general objectives of the Law on the PEC 2017-2020 are the following:

  • To consolidate and extend the statistical information available in the Statistics System of Catalonia
  • To encourage the integration of Catalonia's statistical information
  • To promote the use of official statistics in social science research, and in the evaluation and improvement of public policies
  • To improve coordination of the Statistics System of Catalonia, in both the production and dissemination of statistics, particularly with regard to the quality management of statistical processes and products

Furthermore, it has been approved certain precepts of Law 23/1998, dated 30th December 1998, on statistics in Catalonia, with the goal of adapting it to regulatory changes that have taken place over the last few years in the field of European statistics regarding the use of administrative information, the improvement of the public dissemination of statistical information through the Statistic Portal in Catalonia, the use of statistical information for scientific purposes and to evaluate public policy, as well as guaranteeing the professional independence of the statistical authorities.

Once it has been published in the Official Bulletin of the Government of Catalonia, it may be consulted in the Legislation section.
