In 2015, the proportion of households with Internet access exceeded 75% in all counties and Aran, according to the Territorial Statistics on ICT in Households. With regard to 2013, the number of households with at least one member aged between 16 and 74 years with Internet connection increased in all counties, especially in El Tarragonès and El Barcelonès. This placed these two counties among those with the most households with Internet access (84.9% and 82.8%, respectively), together with El Pla de l'Estany (83%).
Internet access of households through broadband connection was equal among the counties. Therefore, in 2015, the difference between the county with the most broadband (El Tarragonès 84.2%) and the county with the least (El Ripollès 73.1%) was 11.1 percentage points; in contrast, in 2013 the difference between Osona and El Priorat, which then occupied the first and last places in the ranking, was 15.3 points.
With regard to Internet use, all the Catalan counties increased their use. El Tarragonès and El Baix Camp headed the counties with the most use, with percentages higher than 85%. Particularly noteworthy is the the sharp increase in the number of people claiming to have ever made purchases on the Internet. The Central Counties were the ones that increased the purchases the most on the Internet, by almost 16 points in relation to 2013. El Tarragonès and El Baix Camp headed the counties with the most purchases on the Internet, with percentages higher than 60%.
Territorial Statistics on ICT in Households is a biennial operation whose objective is to obtain territorial estimates (areas of the Territorial Plan and counties and Aran) of the most important indicators of equipment and use of ICT in Catalan households. In order to meet this objective, a telephone survey is carried out on 3,150 main Households throughout Catalonia, and composite estimators are calculated by applying a small area methodology. The results of the equipment indicators are calculated for households with at least one member aged between 16 and 74 years, and use indicators for people aged between 16 and 74 years. The reference period of the survey is the year 2015.
The information obtained from the year 2015 is not completely comparable with that of previous years, due to various changes in the territorial distribution. Thus, the Government Agreement 21/2014 approved the change of ascription of eight municipalities of L'Anoia, which moved from the area of El Penedès to the Central Counties. In addition, Law 4/2015, of 23 April, created the El Moianès county from the aggregation of five municipalities in the county of El Bages, one in Osona and four in El Vallès Oriental. By doing so, they changed these counties and the limits of the Metropolitan areas and the Central Counties.
These statistics also provide results for the whole of Catalonia on other current topics related to ICT.
