The number of overnight stays spent at campsites in Catalonia decreased by 48.2% in the first quarter of 2017 on the year-over-year data, according to the provisional data from the Campsite Occupancy Survey. As to the origins of such tourism, domestic campers fell by 55,1%: tourism from Catalonia decreased by 54.9% and the tourism from the rest of the country decreased by 60.2%. Regarding to the foreign tourism also fell (−20.7%). What is more, the year-over-year figures for the number of travellers registering at campsites fell by 33.8%. Note that in 2017 Easter was celebrated in April, while in 2016 it took place in March.
The Campsite Occupancy Survey is one of the main sources of statistics for gauging tourist activity, both from the point of view of supply and demand. Carried out each month by INE and, in Catalonia, it provides quarterly information on travellers, overnight stays and the occupancy rate in campsites. Idescat analyses these variables on the basis of the travellers' places of origin, establishment categories and tourism brands.
