Competitive Position of the Industrial Sector (PCSI). Q4 2016

05.19.2017

In the fourth quarter of 2016, the Index of Competitive Position in Prices of the Catalan manufacturing industry with respect to industrialised countries showed a decline of 0.6 percentage points and reached a level of 104.5, compared to 103.9 in the same period of the previous year.

Futhermore, the Index of the Revealed Competitive Position of industry (which measures the evolution of the market share of Catalan manufacturing exports in the main markets with which Catalonia has commercial flows) worsened in the fourth quarter of 2016 with respect to the same period of the previous year, going from an index of 92.5 to one of 93.2.

The Indicators of the Competitive Position of the Industrial Sector are analysed on the basis of two indexes: the Index of Competitive Position in Prices and the Index of the Revealed Competitive Position.

The Price Competitiveness of Industry Index is defined as the product of the euro exchange rate by an index of relative prices of the Catalan manufacturing industry (section D of the CCAE-93). An increase in the Index of Competitive Position in Prices is interpreted as a reduction in the competitiveness of Catalan manufacturing in relation with competing countries and markets. The data for Catalonia is produced on a quarterly basis by Idescat and the Ministry of Economy and Knowledge, using data from the IMF, the United Nations, and the OECD. The data for Spain is produced by the Bank of Spain.

The Index of the Revealed Competitive Position is defined as the market share of exports by the Catalan manufacturing industry (sections 5 to 8 of the SITC-Rev. 3) for each of the considered countries, indexed in the first quarter of 1999. As opposed to the Index of Competitive Position in Prices, an increase in the Index of the Revealed Competitive Position is interpreted as an improvement in competitiveness. The data for Catalonia is produced on a quarterly basis by Idescat and the Ministry of Economy and Knowledge, using data from the OECD and the State Agency OCDE and the State Tax Administration Agency.
