The number of contributors to Social Security in Catalonia increased by 3.2% in December 2017, with respect to the same period of the previous year, standing at 3,131,688 individuals.
Affiliates increased in all counties in comparison to the same quarter of the previous year. Baix Penedès (4.2%), el Garraf (3.9%) and Gironès (3.8%) are the counties with the highest relative growths.
By sex, as of December 2017, 53.3% of those contributors were men, and 46.7% women. By age, 15.8% of contributors in Catalonia were under 30 years of age; those 30 to 44 made up 41.2%; those 45 to 54, 26.7%, and those 55 and over constituted 16.4% of the total. Regarding nationality, 86.9% of the contributors in Catalonia were of Spanish nationality, while foreigners constituted 13.1% of the total. The annual increase of foreign contributors (8.6%) is higher than that recorded by contributors with Spanish nationality (2.4%).
The number of affiliations in Catalonia on 31 December 2017 was 3,288,591, 3.3% higher than in December 2016.
By sectors and in comparison with December of a year ago, the number of affiliations rose in construction (5.3%), services (3.2%) and industry (3.1%); while the amount fell in agriculture (−1.0%).
By type of employment relationship, the number of affiliations from paid employment grew a 3.9% while those of self-employment remained stable (0.0%).
Every quarter Idescat has published the number of contributors and affiliations to Social Security based on the Contributors' Registered Place of Residence by municipality, county and Aran, area of the Territorial Plan, province and Catalonia as a whole. Contributors are listed according to their main demographic variables (sex, age and nationality) and the affiliations are disseminated according to the employment relationship, contribution regime and activity sector.
