Catalonia exported industrial products amounting to 17,262.9 million euros during the fourth quarter of 2017, a figure which represents a 9.7% year-over-year increase. All the technological levels witnessed increases in sales abroad, with significant rises in medium-low level technology sales (30.8%), followed by high (10.0%), medium-high (6.9%) and low (5.0%).
The value of imports amounted to 19,215.1 million euros in the fourth quarter, with a 6.0% year-over-year increase. The highest increases were recorded for medium-high and medium-low level products (9.0% and 8.7%, respectively), while the other levels saw rises of lesser intensity (2.5% for high level ones and 1.1% for low level ones).
In 2017, Catalonia exported industrial products amounting to 67,461.2 million euros, a figure which represents an increase of 8.9% with respect to the previous year. Exports with a high technological content rose by 9.0%. Medium-high sales, which account for almost half the exports of industrial products, went up by 5.4%. Exports of medium-low level products were those which increased the most in comparison with the previous year (27.9%), while those with a low technological level rose by 6.1%.
With regard to imports, Catalonia imported industrial products amounting to 75,762.9 million euros in 2017, a figure which represents an increase of 6.4% with respect to the previous year. Purchases of products of all technological levels increased and were headed by medium-low level products, which rose by 12.0%. They were followed by high level ones (with a rise of 6.1%), medium-high level ones (a rise of 5.8%) and low level ones (a rise of 4.9%).
The main goal of this statistics, which are drawn up by Idescat based on Customs files, is to present the trade flows of exports and imports of industrial products, which involve a high level of expenditure on R&D, between Catalonia and abroad. The source of information is the territorial operations file of the Customs and Special Taxes Department of the Tax Administration Agency.
