The number of overnight stays in hotel establishments in Catalonia increased by 6.6% year-over-year for the month of March 2018, according to the Hotel Occupancy Survey. Domestic tourist overnight stays increased by 9.3%: of these, Catalan travellers increased by 17.2% and travellers from the rest of the State increased by 2.3%. Foreign tourism overnight stays increased by 5.1%. Note that in 2018 Easter was celebrated between March and April, while in 2017 it took place in April.
By main country of origin, tourists from France, United Kingdom and Germany presented the highest figure in overnight stays in absolute terms (296,0, 229,2 and 214.4 thousand, respectively).
By tourism brands, Barcelona, Costa Brava and Costa Barcelona were the locations that totalled the highest number of overnight stays in absolute terms (1,684.9, 545.0 and 507.1 thousand, respectively).
On the other hand, the number of travellers registered in hotel establishments increased by 6.6% year-over-year with an increase in domestic 8.6% and increase in foreign tourism 5.4%.

The Hotel Occupancy Survey is one of the main sources of statistics for gauging tourist activity. Carried out each month by INE, it provides information on travellers, overnight stays and the occupancy rate in hotel establishments. Idescat analyses these variables according to the provenance of the travellers by place of origin and by destination zones and by category of the establishment.
