Unemployment fell in Catalonia by 118,000 people in the first quarter of 2018 compared to the previous year (−20.5%) standing at 458,700 unemployed people, with an unemployment rate of 12.19% (3.09 points less than the previous year) according to the Active Population Survey. By sex, the year-over-year decline in unemployment for women is higher than that of men (−21.8% and −19.1%, respectively). By ages, stands out the decrease in 25 to 54 years (−26.7%).
The number of householdswith all its active members unemployed in the first quarter of 2018 decreased by 40,100 (−22.0%) with respect to the same period of the previous year, and stands at 142,200 households.
The number of employed people rose by 105,300 individuals, totalling 3,303,300 people, 3.3% higher than the same period of the previous year. By sector, if we compare employment by the year-over-year, the highest absolute increase in employed people corresponds to industry (55,800 persons; 9.9%), followed by the service sector (42,600 persons; 1.8%), and the construction sector (7,100 persons; 3.6%). By sex, the employment increased evenly for women as for men (3.3%). As for age groups, the greatest increase in employment from the previous year occurred in population from 55 and more (4.9%), followed by young people from 16 to 24 (4.5%). Regarding type of working day, the increase is more intense in full-time employment (3.8%) than in part-time (0.3%). Among the employees population, the increase in temporary contracts (3.7%) was higher than permanent contracts (2.8%).
With regard to specific sectors, the population working in the cultural sector increased by 1.4% in the year-over-year, totalling 166,900 people, representing 5.1% of the total employment rate. By sex, the cultural sector employed 98,200 men and 68,700 women.
In the tourism sector, the number of employed people rose by 3.5% with respect to the first quarter of 2017, totalling 426,000 people (12.9% of the entire working population). By sex the tourism sector employs 239,000 men and 187,000 women.
The ICT sector employed 111,600 people in the fisrt quarter of 2018 (9.2% more than one year ago), representing 3.4% of the total employment rate.
The statistical source of this data is the Active population survey (EPA in its Catalan acronym). EPA is a continuous sampling survey carried out in all of Spain by the INE on a quarterly basis, the main purpose of which is to study the relationship with the economic activity of the population.
