The number of overnight stays spent at campsites in Catalonia increased by 71.0% in the first quarter of 2018 on the year-over-year data, according to the provisional data from the Campsite Occupancy Survey. As to the origins of such tourism, domestic campers grew by 90.0%: tourism from Catalonia increased by 89.5% and the tourism from the rest of the country increased by 104.7%. Regarding to the foreign tourism also grew by 28.5%. Further, the year-over-year figures for the number of travellers registering at campsites increased by 46.1%. Note that in 2018 Easter was celebrated between March and April, while in 2017 it took place in April.
The Campsite Occupancy Survey is one of the main sources of statistics for gauging tourist activity, both from the point of view of supply and demand. Carried out each month by INE and, in Catalonia, it provides quarterly information on travellers, overnight stays and the occupancy rate in campsites. Idescat analyses these variables on the basis of the travellers' places of origin, establishment categories and tourism brands.
