Continuous Household Survey. 2018

There were 3,004,300 households in Catalonia in 2018, according to the results of the Continuous Household Survey. The average number of people per household was 2.5. By the number of members, 26.0% were single-person households, 31.4% of the households contained two people, 20.3% contained three people and 22.3% contained four or more people.

The most frequent type of household was that of a single nucleus, with 2,087,400 households, accounting for 69.5% of the total. Of the above, 1,052,900 comprised couples with children, 719,600 comprised couples without children and 314,900 were single-parent nuclei (a father or mother with one or more children). Households with two or more nuclei (49,300 households) accounted for a very low percentage (1.6%), whereas households without a nucleus (867,600) accounted for 28.9% and the vast majority of these were single-person households (780,800).

In 2018, 13.3% of the population aged above 20 lived alone, with significant differences according to age and sex. The percentage of people under 65 living alone is below that 13.3%, but this percentage grows considerably with age. One in five people aged 65 to 79 lived alone (26.7% of women and 13.0% of men), while in the case of people aged 80 and over was one in three (44. 8% of women and 16.3% of men).

As for the nationality of couples, 83.2% of the total (1,838,800) were couples made up of two people of Spanish citizenship, 8.9% were made up of people of foreign nationality and 7.9% were mixed couples.

In 2018, households exclusively made up of people of foreign nationality totalled 224,700, accounting for 7.5% of the total number of households in Catalonia. The types of households made up of these people were basically households with a single nucleus comprising marriages and couples with children (37.4%) and, secondly, households without a nucleus (32.0%). With regard to the size of these households, those with four and more people predominated (29.1%), followed by households with a single person (26.0%), two people (25.0%) and three people (19.9%).

69.4% of the 3,004,300 main homes in Catalonia were owned and, of these, 844,200 (28.1%) had outstanding payments. Rental housing accounted for 26.0% and the remaining 4.6% corresponded to other situations.
