ETICCE

These statistics have a specific section with all the information available: Survey on the Use of ICT and e-Commerce in Companies (ETICCE).

Methodological note

The data spreads Eurostat are collected by the National Statistical Institutes or Ministries corresponding Members States, and are based on Eurostat's annual model surveys on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) usage and e-commerce in enterprises. The aim of these surveys is to collect and disseminate harmonised and comparable information on the use of ICT and e-commerce at European level.

The study population consists of enterprises (with at least 10 persons employed) at least 1% of turnover revenue comes from e-commerce.

In order to assure the broadest international comparability of the enterprise ICT usage statistics, the OECD definition of e-commerce is used throughout this module (Update of the OECD Statistical Definition of e-commerce (DSTI/ICCP/IIS(2009)5/FINAL). According to this definition:

  • an e-commerce transaction is the sale or purchase of goods or services, conducted over computer neworks by methods specifically designed for the purpose of receiving or placing of orders.
  • the goods or services are ordered by those methods, but the payment and the ultimate delivered of the goods or services do not have to be conducted online.
  • an e-commerce transaction can be between enterprises, households, individuals, governments, and other public or private organisations.
  • an e-commerce transaction include the orders made in web pages, extranet or EDI Electronic Data Interchange) and exclude orders made by telephone calls, facsimile, or manually typed e-mail.

It doesn't include the use of this network merely as a person-to-person communication tool. For this reason conventional e-mails manually typed are excluded from this definition. However, if the e-mail system is just used for the transmission of an automatic message, i.e. computer-to-computer without human intervention, which represents an order for a product or service, then it is considered an e-commerce transaction.

The data for Catalonia and the rest of the territorial areas are not strictly comparable, since there may be small methodological differences.

The information on the use of ICT and communication refers to the year in which the corresponding survey is carried out. However, in the case of data related to e-commerce, the reference period is the calendar year prior to the realisation of this survey.
