Methodological note

Methodological aspects

For freshwater fishing in Catalonia you must have a recreational fishing licence, which is also valid for sea fishing. In addition to the recreational fishing licence, if you wish to fish in a zona de pesca controlada (ZPC), or controlled fishing area, you must have the corresponding fishing permit.

Licences are valid for 15 days or for 1, 2, 3 or 4 years, and can be obtained from the Territorial Services or Regional Offices of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Food and Natural Environment (DAAM) or online via the website of the Virtual Citizen Care Office (OVT).

The licenses expire once their respective validity period or, failing that, after 65 years.

According to Law 5/2012, of March 20th, on fiscal, financial and administrative measures and on creation of the tax on tourist accommodation, disabled people, people under the age of 18 and people over the age of 65 can obtain the recreational fishery licence for free.

Every year the DAAM passes a close season Resolution specifying species that can legally be caught, fishing seasons and other fishing regulations.

Pursuant to Law 22/2009, of 23 December, on the sustainable management of fisheries in inland waters, the penalties for infringement are defined as follows: minor offences, serious offences and major offences.
