Methodological note

The Mortgage Statistics include information about the number of mortgaged real estate items, the value of the loans and the number of properties which have paid off their mortgages in the property register.

Real Estate Mortgages refer to rural and urban properties (dwellings, plots and other).

The reference date is the date of registration in the Property Register.

The source of information is the Mortgage Statistics produced by the INE, which gathers data from the Colegio de Registradores de la Propiedad, Mercantiles y Bienes Muebles de España, thus giving greater coverage and a higher response rate. The data have been updated with a new base from January 2003. This quantitative leap needs to be taken into account when analysing year-on-year change.
