Methodological note

Definition of concepts

Theatre
Permanent facility offering the technical conditions for performing plays, and whose main purpose is programming stage arts and which schedules at least five performances a year (until the year 1999 only halls offering ten performances a year were included in the census).

Methodological aspects

The statistics for theatres have been compiled of the theatres that satisfy the following definition: a permmanent venue with the necessary technical facilities for the performance of stage works, the principal use of which is the presentation of stage shows, with an annual programme of at least 5 performance over the course of the year.

Minimal stability and professionalism criteria for theatre and dance companies are: three years producing and performing their own plays and five paid performances per year.
