Methodological aspects

The information on the population residing in group establishments is obtained from the Survey of Groups, which forms part of the Population and Housing Census 2011. The Census is aimed at people residing both in family homes and group establishments (hotels, old people's homes, caserns, convents). As group establishments have specific characteristics, they are researched by means of an independent field operation.

The study population for the Group Establishments Survey is all group establishments in the whole of the Catalan territory that have at least one resident on the census reference date (November 1, 2011), and is used to determine the number and types of group establishments on that reference date. It also reports on the basic demographic characteristics of the people living in them, such as sex, age, marital status, place of birth, nationality, residence one year previously, level of education and relation with activity.

The following types of group establishment are considered:

  • Old people's homes;
  • Healthcare institutions (psychiatric or long-stay hospitals);
  • institutions for the disabled;
  • childcare institutions;
  • religious institutions (monasteries, abbeys...);
  • military establishments (caserns...);
  • penitentiary institutions (prisons, juvenile detention centres...);
  • other types of centre (hotels or similar and workers' residences).

In the case of hotels or similar, unlike the others, it is common for people not to be residing in them habitually, but rather to simply be residing in them for certain periods. In accordance with the census definitions, these cases are not considered group establishments.

Unlike in previous censuses, the following types are not considered to be group establishments:

  • student halls of residence, as has the students, in accordance with the census regulations, must be counted at the family residence;
  • short-stay general and special hospitals where there are no habitual residents, because stays in these hospitals are for less than 12 months;
  • refuges for socially excluded persons, as it is considered that the people residing in them have a residence or are homeless;
  • boarding schools and military schools or seminaries, because in all these cases the residents must be counted at the family home.
