Methodological note

In accordance with the Ordinance of 18 February 1993 of the Ministry of Parliamentary Relations and the Secretary to the Government, which amended the traffic accidents statistics (BOE no. 47, 24 February 2003), these statistics collect all accidents complying with the following circumstances:

1. Occurring or originating on one of the roads or terrains subject to traffic, motor vehicle transit or road safety laws.

1.2 Resulting in:

  • a) The death or injury of one or more persons.
  • b) Strictly material damage.

1.3 Involving, as a minimum, one moving vehicle.

2. Definitions

Accidents with victims

Those resulting in the death or injury of one of more persons.

Victims

Persons who are killed or injured as a result of a traffic accident.

Injured

All persons not killed in a traffic accident, but who have received one or more serious or minor injuries.

Seriously injured

Any person who, as a result of an accident, is hospitalized for a period longer than 24 hours.

Slightly injured

Any person who, as a result of an accident, receives medical assistance at the scene of the accident or is hospitalized for a period shorter than 24 hours.

Deaths

Persons who, in consequence of an accident, die at the time of the accident or within the subsequent 30 days.

The number of deaths in the first 24 hours is determined by monitoring all incidents; the number of deaths within 30 days is determined — prior to the moment in which the monitoring of all injuries is fully assured within this period— by applying a correction factor to the total deaths in the first 24 hours that is deduced from the actual monitoring of a sample of the seriously injured; this is done at least every four years by the Catalan Traffic Service, in conjunction within the Spanish Department of Traffic. These correction factors were first applied in 1993. They were reviewed in accordance with the stipulations of the aforementioned Ordinance of the Ministry of Parliamentary Relations and the Secretary to the Government; in 2001 new factors were applied.
