Methodological note

The Industrial Price Index (IPRI) is a short-term indicator which measures changes in the prices of products manufactured by industry in the first stage of marketing. Sales prices are ex-works and do not include transport or marketing expenses prevailing on any particular day (list and catalogue prices are excluded). VAT is not included but all other taxes net of production subsidies are.

The Industrial products price index includes all the major industrial sectors apart from energy, defined according to Regulation (EC) No 656/2007 of the Commission of the European Communities modifying Regulation (EC) No 586/2001 as regards the definition of Main Industrial Groupings. The Industrial products price index does not include divisions 06, 19, 35 and 36 (CCEA-09).

The information on the IPRI is disaggregated into the large industrial sectors established in the above-mentioned Regulation, into which Idescat incorporates an additional disaggregation of the equipment and intermediate goods for Catalonia.

The indexes use Laspeyres methodology, with weightings set for the base year (2015), in line with the information from the Structural Business Statistics in the Industrial Sector and other sources.

A continuous survey is taken of some 9.000 establishments every month in order to produce this short-term indicator. The more than 1.500 industrial products which make up the basket for the IPRI Base 2015 basically follow the PRODCOM (Community Production) classification for harmonization of statistics for industrial production in EU countries.

In compliance with EU regulations, since January 2018 the indexes have been published with the new base 2015 and following the new Catalan Classification of Economic Activities 2009 (CCEA-2009). The linked series of indexes are published as of January 2002.

The implementation of this new base improves the representativeness of the indicator with changes in the composition of the product basket and the updating of the weighting structure.
