Methodological note

Number of students enrolled by education level, according to the CINE-2011 (ISCED) (International Standard Classification of Education):

  • Level 0. Early childhood education. Initial stage of organized instruction, designed to introduce very young children to a school-type environment. Early childhood education programmes target young children below the age of entry into primary education.

In Catalonia early childhood education is from 0 to 5 years.

  • Level 1. Primary education. Projects designed to give a sound basic education in reading, writing and mathematics. Starts at the ages of 5, 6 or 7. Primary education programmes do not require previous formal education, although it is increasingly more common for children to have taken pre-school education.

In Catalonia, primary education begins at 6 years.

  • Level 2. Lower secondary education. Education at this level is designed to complete the basic education started at level 1. The programmes usually follow a more subject-oriented pattern: teachers are more specialised and generally teach classes only in their speciality.

In Catalonia this level covers compulsory secondary education (ESO) and graduation in compulsory secondary education (adult education).

  • Level 3. Upper secondary education. Final stage of secondary education in most countries. This level can involve greater specialisation than level 2, and often more highly qualified or specialised teachers.

In Catalonia this level covers general upper secondary education, vocational training cycles for intermediate level, training cycles for intermediate level in plastic arts and design, intermediate level in sports and Initial Vocational Training Programmes (PQPI).

  • Level 4. Post-secondary non-tertiary education. Does not exist in Spain.
  • Level 5.Short-cycle tertiary education. Programmes at this level are usually practically-based, occupationally specific and prepare students to enter the labour market. However, they may also provide a pathway to other tertiary educaction programmes.

In Catalonia this covers advanced level in design, conservation and restoration of cultural assets, dramatic arts, advanced level in music, advanced level in dance, advanced level in specific vocational training, training cycles for advanced level in plastic arts and design, and advanced level in sports.

  • Level 6.Bachelor's or equivalent level. Programmes at this level are longer and usually more theoretically-oriented than ISCED level 5 programmes. They are often designed to provide participants with intermediate academic and/or professional knowledge, skills and competencies, leading to a first degree or equivalent qualification. Programmes at this level are typically theoretically-based but may include practical components and are informed by state of the art research and/or best professional practice.

In Catalonia this level covers bachelor and first cycle in university education.

  • Level 7. Master's or equivalent level. Master's or equivalent level. Programmes at this level are often designed to provide participants with advanced academic and/or professional knowledge, skills and competencies, leading to a second degree or equivalent qualification. Programmes at this level may have a substantial research component but do not yet lead to the award of a doctoral qualification. Typically, programmes at this level are theoretically-based but may include practical components and are informed by state of the art research and/or best professional practice.

In Catalonia this level covers master degree studies and long first degree (first and second cicles) in university education.

  • Level 8. Doctoral or equivalent level. Programmes at this level are designed primarily to lead to an advanced research certificate (universities).

    A Catalunya, les dades d'estudiants de nivell 8 s'inclouen a partir del curs 2010/2011.

  • The reference year refers to the second part of the school year: 2001 corresponds to 2000/2001, and so on successively.

Eurostat implementa la nova classificació CINE-2011 (ISCED) a partir del curs 2012/2013. Per a les dades de cursos anteriors la classificació que es segueix és la CINE-97 (ISCED).
