Catalonia exported industrial products valued at 17,393.2 million euros in the first quarter of 2018, a figure constituting a 2.9% increase in comparison with the same period the previous year. By technological levels, high-level technological exports fell year-over-year by 4.4%, medium-high level technological exports rose by 7.3%, medium-low level technological exports decreased by 1.5% and those with a low technological content went up slightly, by 0.3%.
Imports of industrial products recorded a value of 20,235.4 million euros, a figure representing a year-over-year increase of 4.6%. All the technological levels underwent increases in purchases abroad, except for those with a low technological content (−0.2%). High-level technological purchases increased by 7.2%, followed by those with a medium-low technological level (7.1%) and a medium-high level (5.5%).
The main goal of this statistics, which are drawn up by Idescat based on Foreign Trade files, is to present the trade flows of exports and imports of industrial products, which involve a high level of expenditure on R&D, between Catalonia and abroad. The source of information is the territorial operations file of the Customs and Special Taxes Department of the Tax Administration Agency. The file in question contains the most relevant information obtained from Single Administrative Document (SAD) and Intrastat declaration data.
