Indicators of Service Sector Activity. Indexes of Production and Turnover. Q1 2018

The Production Index in the Service Sector (IPROSS) (base 2015=100) increased by 6.3% on year-over-year data in Catalonia in the first quarter of 2018. Furthermore, the Turnover Index (IASSVN) also showed an increase of 5.5% with respect to one year ago, since trade increased by 4.1% and the other services (this is to say, all except for trade) increased by 8.3%. Within the other services, all sectors registered increases, showing the highest growths: administrative activities and auxiliary services by 19.1%, professional, scientific and technical activities by 9.0%, hostelry (5.4%) and Information and communications (5.4%).

The Production Index (IPROSS) and Turnover Index (IASSVN) in the services sector measure the short-term evolution in the activities of companies operating in the Retail, Transport and storage, Hostelry, Information and communication, Professional, scientific and technical activities, Administrative activities and auxiliary services and company services. The most important indicator when analysing the short-term economic performance is the IPROSS, as its results best reflect the real evolution of the GVA in the services sector.

Based on the data from the INE's activity index in the services sector (IASS), every quarter Idescat draws up a short-term report on the indicators in the services sector. This report includes the general turnover index (IASSVN) broken down into five sectors and the production index in the services sector (IPROSS). The latter is obtained from the aggregate value added index (IAVASS) once the influence of prices on the economic activity (deflator) is eliminated.

With the publication of the data for first quarter of 2018 based on 2015, Idescat complies with Council Regulation (EC) 1165/98 on short-term statistics, which establishes a change of basis every five years. The implementation of this new basis improves the representativeness of the indicator and updates the industrial activities included, the composition of the market basket, the weighting structure and the sample of informant units. The linked sets of the indexes based on 2015 have been published since first quarter of 2006.
