Labour Cost Statistics. 2017

The total gross labour cost per worker stood at 32,374.69 euros in Catalonia in 2017, a figure that represents a decrease of 0.3% compared to 2016 according to the Annual Labour Cost Survey. By sectors, the gross labour cost increased by 0.1% in industry and fell by 0.3% in construction and services. By branches the highest year-over-year rises in the gross labour cost occurred in metallurgy (6.7%) and administrative activities and auxiliary services (4.6%). In contrast, it fell the most in Information and communications (−4.4%) and Education and Mining industries, energy, water and waste (−3.7%).

The wage cost rose by 0.3% in 2017 in comparison with the previous year. By sectors, it increased by 0.3% in industry and fell by 1.2% in construction and 0.3% in services.

By components, 74.57% of the gross annual labour cost per worker corresponded to the wage cost (24,140.50 euros), 23.20% corresponded to compulsory Social Security contributions (7,511.52 euros) and 2.23% corresponded to other cost components (722.66 euros).

By unit size, the gross labour cost per worker increased in the units with 1 to 49 workers (2.0%). In contrast, it fell by 1.9% in those with 50 to 199 workers and 1.5% in those with 200 or more workers.

Together with the publication of the results for the year 2017, 2016 data are revised.

The Annual Labour Cost Survey is an annual statistical operation that completes the results obtained by the Quarterly labour cost survey and offers and annual perspective of these costs. Its main objective is provide annual figures for the average cost per worker of the labour factor and its main components: salary expectations, obligatory social security contributions, voluntary contributions, direct social contributions, compensation, professional training costs, transport costs, social costs and other costs derived from the generation of employment.
