Migratory Movements. 2017

In 2017, 236,694 changes of residence between Catalan municipalities were recorded, representing a 2.8% fall with respect to 2016, according to the Statistics on migratory movements. The total migratory balance for Catalonia during the year 2017 stood at 61,512 net entries, as a result of the inputs of migration from the rest of Spain (4,216) and migration from abroad (57,296).

Most Catalan counties and Aran recorded positive migratory balances. Only El Baix Ebre, La Cerdanya, El Pallars Jussà, La Ribera d’Ebre and La Terra Alta recorded negative balances. El Barcelonès, with a balance of 21,079 movements, stood out as a recipient of migrations from the rest of Spain and abroad and as an originator of movements within Catalonia.

56.2% of the internal movements in Catalonia were between counties. The counties bordering on El Barcelonès were centres of attraction for inter-county flows. El Maresme (1,820 movements), El Vallès Oriental (1,461) and El Vallès Occidental (1,115) recorded the highest values in terms of net migratory balances. In addition, El Barcelonès recorded the highest negative balance, with 9,945 net departures to the rest of Catalonia.

As for migrations within Catalonia in accordance with the size of the municipality, we can observe that municipalities originators of migratory flows to other municipalities were those with between 50,001 and 100,000 inhabitants (-717 ) and Barcelona (-9,222).

The net migratory balance between the whole of Catalonia and the rest of Spain was positive in 27 counties and Aran. El Barcelonès accounted for most of the 4,216 net entries, with a balance of 2,776 movements, followed by El Vallès Occidental (463) and Osona (347). There were 14 counties with negative balances and the greatest differences between immigration and emigration occurred in El Baix Llobregat (-67) and El Maresme (-61).

The increase in migratory movements between Catalonia and abroad was reflected in positive balances in all the counties and Aran, except for La Cerdanya and El Montsià. El Barcelonès recorded the highest positive balance (28,248), with a positive net migration rate of 12.6‰ inhabitants. At the other extreme, La Cerdanya recorded a negative balance of 204 movements (corresponding to a rate of -11.5‰).

The Statistics on Migratory Movements, first published in 1988 and annually ever since, contain municipal migratory figures by origin or destination, and their aim is to annually compile the migratory flows from the counties and municipalities of Catalonia. The Statistics on Changes in Residence in Catalonia are produced on the basis of the registrations and cancellations due to changes of residence that local councils send to the National Statistics Institute (INE) on a monthly basis.
