Unemployment fell in Catalonia by 72,000 people in the third quarter of 2018 compared to the previous year (−15.1%) standing at 403,700 unemployed people, with an unemployment rate of 10.63% (1.91 points less than the previous year) according to the Active Population Survey. By sex, the year-over-year decline in unemployment for women is higher than that of men (−20.3% and −9.8%, respectively). By ages, stands out the decrease in the group of 55 years and over (−33.1%).
The number of households with all its active members unemployed in the third quarter of 2018 decreased by 20,300 (−14.2%) with respect to the same period of the previous year, and stands at 122,800 households.
The number of employed people rose by 77,300 individuals, totalling 3,393,900 people, 2.3% higher than the same period of the previous year. By sector, if we compare employment by the year-over-year, the highest absolute increase in employed people corresponds to industry (37,600 persons; 6.3%), followed by the service sector (33,700 persons; 1.4%) and agriculture (5,500 persons; 9.9%), while construction remains stable. By sex, employment increased in woman (2.7%) than in men (2.0%). As for age groups, the greatest increase in employment in comparison to the previous year occurred in young people from 16 to 24 (10.8%) followed by population from 55 and more (5.7%). Regarding type of working day, increase full-time employment (3.1%) while decreasing to part-time (−2.5%). Among the employees population, the increase in tempory contracts (6.4%) was higher than in permanent contracts (2.0%).
With regard to specific sectors, the population working in the cultural sector increased by 0.2% in the year-over-year, totalling 166,300 people, representing 4.9% of the total employment rate. By sex, the cultural sector employed 91,300 men and 75,000 women.
In the tourism sector, the number of employed people decreased by 0.4% with respect to the third quarter of 2017, totalling 463,500 people (13.7% of the entire working population). By sex the tourism sector employs 265,000 men and 198,500 women.
The ICT sector employed 106,900 people in the third quarter of 2018 (5.3% less than one year ago), representing 3.2% of the total employment rate.
The statistical source of this data is the Active population survey (EPA in its Catalan acronym). EPA is a continuous sampling survey carried out in all of Spain by the INE on a quarterly basis, the main purpose of which is to study the relationship with the economic activity of the population.
