Marriages Statistics. 2018. Provisional data
The number of marriages of residents in Catalonia held in 2018 stood at 27,026, according to Idescat’s provisional data, which do not include those registered outside Catalonia. This figure represents a fall of 7.9% with respect to the definitive data for 2017, which also include the marriages of residents in Catalonia held in the rest of Spain.
The crude marriage rate in 2018 was 3.6 marriages per 1,000 inhabitants, while the rate stood at 3.9‰ in 2017.
With regard to the previous marital status of the spouses, 68.1% of the weddings corresponded to first marriages for both of them, while 19.8% were weddings between a single person and another previously married one. Weddings corresponding to second marriages for both spouses accounted for 12.1% of the total number held in 2018.
As for the gender of the spouses, 25,971 marriages (96.2% of the total number) were couples of different gender while 1,055 (a 3.8%) were same-gender spouses, of which 516 corresponded to marriages of two men and 539 of two women.
Idescat disseminates the information by municipality, counties, areas of the territorial plan, provinces and Catalonia. The data are being released annually in two phases: the provisional data (containing marriages between residents of Catalonia having been registered in Catalonia) and the definitive data (containing marriages between Catalonian residents who registered their union both in Civil Registers of Catalonia and in other autonomous communities).
