Contributors and Affiliations to Social Security based on Contributors' Registered Place of Residence. 03/2020. Provisional data
The number of affiliations to the Social Security in Catalonia fell by 3.1% on 31 March 2020 compared with the same period of the previous year, standing at 3,328,454 individuals, according to provisional data. In absolute figures, the year-over-year fall is 106,079 affiliations and the decrease from the previous quarter is 119,121 (−3.5%).
By economic sectors and in comparison with March the previous year, the number of Social Security affiliations fell in all sectors: construction (−7.1%), agriculture (−3.2%), services (−2.9%) and industry (−2.2%).
By economic division, five branches are at the top of Social Security affiliations in absolute figures and account for two-thirds of the year-over-year decrease. Thus, in relation to the same period of the previous year, Social Security affiliations in the food and beverage services sector decreased by 21,852 (−10.2%), employment-related activities by 21,721 (−40.0%), accommodation services by 9,433 (−20.5%), retail trade by 8,887 (−2.7%) and in specialised activities in construction by 7,551 (−5.9%). The sharp decreases in clothing manufacturing (-11.5%) and the arts and entertainment (−10.8%) were also significant.
By type of employment relationship, the numbers of Social Security affiliations in employees (−3.4%) fell by more than those of the self-employed (−1.4%). In terms of employees registered with the Social Security system, the most significant development was the year-over-year decrease of those with temporary contracts (−15.4%) while those with indefinite contracts increased (1.3%). With regard to type of day, the sharpest decreases were in permanent discontinuous contracts (−12.7%) and part-time contracts (−9.2%).
The number of contributors to the Social Security in Catalonia fell by 2.8% in March 2020 with respect to the same period of the previous year, standing at 3,171,595 individuals, that is 91,736 fewer.
The number of contributors compared with March 2019 fell in all counties, with the biggest decrease in L'Aran (−21.3%), L'Alta Ribagorça (−8.4%) and El Pallars Sobirà (−6.9%).
By sex, the number of male contributors fell by 3.4% and female contributors decreased by 2.2%. By age, the most significant developments were the year-over-year decreases of Social Security contributors under the age of 30 (−7.9%) and in the 30-44 age group (−5.7%) and the increase among those aged 55 and over (3.8%). By nationality, the year-over-year decrease in foreign contributors (−3.0%) was slightly higher than that of contributors who are Spanish nationals (−2.8%).
As a consequence of the health emergency caused by COVID-19, Idescat disseminates the provisional results of Social Security contributors according to contributors' registered place of residence for March 2020. The definitive results will be published in June, in accordance with Idescat's publication calendar.
For the first time, Idescat publishes the Social Security contributor data by economic categories 2009 Catalan Classification of Economic Activities) for Catalonia. Results are published by the main demographic variables (sex, age and nationality) and by type of employment relationship, contribution regime, and type of contract and day for employees affiliations. The statistical series are provided from March 2012 to March 2020.
