Industrial Price Index. 03/2020

The Industrial Products Price Index (excluding energy) increased by 1.0% in year-over-year terms in Catalonia in March 2020. By large industrial sectors prices of consumer goods (4.3%) and those of the equipment goods (0.2%) grew, whereas energy prices (−10.2%) and intermediate goods (−2.2%) decreased.

On the other hand, by industrial divisions, the most significant increases in prices were registered in industries of food products (3.0%) and in the repair and installation of machinery and equipment (2.2%). By contrast, prices metallurgy, manufacture of basic iron, steel and ferroalloy products (−8.0%) and chemical industries (−4.3%) decreased.

During the same period the Industrial Price Index decreased by 1.3% compared to the same month of the previous year.

The entry into force of Royal Decree 463/2020, of 14 March, whereby a state of alarm is declared for the management of the health crisis situation caused by COVID-19 has caused many companies to close or produce with less intensity from that date. Although this situation has meant that it has not been possible to contact some companies or for some respondents to complete the survey due to a lack of sales, the proportion of prices compiled has been very acceptable, as a result of which the quality of the indicators for the month is similar to that of others.
