Foreign Tourism Expenditure. 03/2020
The total expenditure by tourists resident abroad whose main destination is Catalonia was 416 million euros to March 2020, a figure that means a decrease of 66.4% compared with the same period the previous year.
By countries of residence, all countries showed negative rates. The US and France stand out with an expenditure of 57 and 47 million euros respectively, which mean a year-over-year decrease of 60.8% and 64.2%, followed by the United Kingdom and Germany, both with an expenditure of 25 million euros and negative rates of 69.8% and 62.6%, respectively.
The average daily expenditure per person is 193 euros, a figure that indicates a year-over-year decrease of 2.4%. The main items of expenditure are international transport (€136 million) and activities (€85 million).
The entry into force of Royal Decree 463/2020, of 14 March, whereby a state of alarm is declared for the management of the health crisis situation caused by COVID-19, and the orders INT/248/2020, of 16 March, and INT/270/2020, of 21 March, suppress the flow of international visitors for tourism reasons. Given that the survey of visitors is conducted at the moment they leave the country and that it was only possible to conduct the interviews before the entry into force of the state of alarm, full information is only available from field work conducted before 14 March. Despite this, it has been possible to construct the usual monthly estimators and the data are deemed to be of sufficient quality to be disseminated.
