Population Estimates. 2020. Advance. Provisional data

The population of Catalonia on 1 January 2020 amounted to 7,727,029 inhabitants, according to provisional data of Population Estimates produced by Idescat. This figure represents an annual increase of 107,525 inhabitants (1.4%) compared to 2019, thus confirming the growth tendency begun in 2015.

By territory, El Penedès is the one where the population has increased most in relative terms, with a growth of 1.7%, followed by El Camp de Tarragona, the Central Counties and the Metropolitan Area (1.5% in all three). In contrast, Les Terres de l’Ebre (0.4%) and L’Alt Pirineu i Aran (0.7%) are the territories where the population has increased the least.

The Advanced results of Population Estimates are available for Catalonia, its provinces and all 8 areas of the Territorial Plan. The results are provisional and will remain valid until next December, when Idescat replaces them by the definitive postcensal estimates, which is calculated once the figures of births, deaths and migrations of the reference year are available.
