Statistics on Contributory Pensions. Contributory Social Security Pensions and Pensioners. 2019

In 2019, there were 1,513,684 pensioners residing in Catalonia that received contributory pensions from the Social, a figure that is 1.0% higher than that of the previous year, which equates to 19.7% of the population.

Pensioners received an average of 1.14 pensions and the average pension was €1,184 per month, 3.4% more than in 2018. By sex, a significant inequality is observed between men (1,374 €) and women (1,003 €). With regard to the gross amount received by pensioners, in Catalonia in December 2019, in monthly average terms, 50.3% of pensioners did not receive more than 1,000 €, 35.6% received between 1,001 € and 2,000 € and 14.1% received more than 2,000 €.

In 2019, pensioners received a total of 1,720,098 pensions. By type of scheme, 78.9% were covered by the Social Security General Regime and 18.6% by the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers. The average pension in December under the General Regime was €1,116 while for the self-employed it was €717. By pension type, 65.2% were retirement pensions, 22.6% widowhood, 9.3% for permanent incapacity, 2.8% for orphanhood and 0.1% for family favour.

The counties with the highest proportion of pensioners of the total population were El Berguedà (29.2%), El Ripollès (28.4%) and La Terra Alta (28.2%), while those with a lower proportion were L'Aran (14.1%), La Cerdanya (15.4%) and L'Alt Empordà (15.8%). In absolute figures, the counties with the most pensioners were El Barcelonès (482,710), El Vallès Occidental (175,653) and El Baix Llobregat (155,572). At the other extreme were L'Alta Ribagorça (746), El Pallars Sobirà (1,296) and L'Aran (1,421).

The counties where pensioners received the highest average monthly amounts were: El Barcelonès (1,278 €), El Tarragonès (1,226 €) and El Baix Llobregat (1,221 €). At the other extreme were La Terra Alta (858 €) and Les Garrigues (889 €).

By municipalities with 20,000 inhabitants or more, Esplugues de Llobregat (23.3%), Manresa (22.7%) and Igualada (22.5%) were the ones that had the highest percentages of pensioners of the population. In contrast, Salou, Lloret de Mar and Vila-Seca had the smallest percentages (12.3%, 12.9% and 13.3%, respectively). In absolute figures, Barcelona was the municipality with the most pensioners (350,193), followed by L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (55,240) and Sabadell (46,432).

The municipalities where pensioners received the highest average monthly amount were Sant Cugat del Vallès (1,443 €), Sant Quirze del Vallès (1,389 €), Barcelona (1,321 €) and Tarragona (1,304 €). At the other end of the scale were Lloret de Mar (964 €), Amposta (976 €) and Palafrugell (994 €).
