Consumer Price Index. 05/2020

The Consumer Price Index (IPC) decreased by 1.0% on a year-over-year basis in Catalonia in May 2020. The groups with the highest inflation have been Food and non-alcoholic beverages (3.4%) and Hotels, cafés and restaurants (1.6%). The group that had a negative variation rate was Transport (−8.6%), Housing (−5.4%), Leisure and culture (−0,4%) and Medicine (−0.1%).

The entry into force of the Royal Decree 463/2020, of 14 March, whereby a state of alarm is declared for the management of the health crisis situation caused by COVID-19, has meant that a considerable proportion of consumer goods and services are not available for purchase or are only available via e-commerce. Furthermore, the confinement measures prevent the INE's survey workers from collecting price data by visiting establishments that would otherwise be open. For this reason, part of the technical processing of the estimation of prices of the CPI for the month of May has been modified.
