Indicators of Service Sector Activity. Turnover Index. 04/2020

The Turnover Index for the service sector (IASSVN) decreased by 41.1% year-over-year rate in Catalonia in April 2020. By activity sectors, dropped trade (−39.5%) and other services, this is to say, all except trade (−43.8%). Within these other services, all sectors showed a fall; the highest decrease was registered by hostelry (−92.3%).

The entry into force of Royal Decree 463/2020, of 14 March, whereby a state of alarm is declared for the management of the health crisis situation caused by COVID-19, restricts people's freedom of movement (art. 7) and suspends the opening to the public of retail premises and establishments, with certain exceptions (art. 10.1), hostelry activities (art. 10.4) with the exceptions set out in the Order TMA/227/2020, of 23 March, and in the Order TMA/305/2020, of 30 March, and restaurant activities, which are only permitted to provide home delivery services. This fact has produced an unprecedented situation in the activity of the services sector since the second half of the month of March. Despite the fact that the collection of data began once the reference period had ended and, therefore, it took place throughout the month of May (when the state of alarm was still in force), the response rate has been very acceptable, consequently the quality of the indicators for April is similar to that of any other month.
