Quarterly Accounts. Q2/2021. Advance of the GDP

Catalonia's gross domestic product showed year-over-year growth of 19.1% in the second quarter of 2021, according to the advanced estimate. It should be born in mind that the Catalan economy's negative performance in the same period in 2020, which registered a fall of 21.6%, was due to the effect of the measures adopted to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. In quarter-over-quarter terms, the rate of change was 4.1%.

By sector, each one showed positive a year-over-year variation. Industry went from a rate of 1.8% in the first quarter to 24.3% in the second quarter, leading the recovery of the Catalan economy. Services registered a rate of change of 17.6%, more than 20 points higher than in the first quarter of 2021 (−4.9%). Construction demonstrated a strong recovery and reached a rate of change of 15.4% compared to the same period for the previous year and showed a great improvement compared to the previous quarter (−11.4%). Finally, agriculture, with a year-over-year variation of 0.2%, is eight tenths of a percentage point below the last quarter (1.0%).

The aim of the is to provide information on the evolution of the Catalan economy with the least possible delay with respect to the reference quarter. For this reason, the calculation of main aggregates uses statistical sources that do not cover the entire period and which normally exclude data for the third month of the quarter.

The advance of the GDP results for the second quarter of 2021 are provisional and will be updated in the next publication of the quarterly accounts, scheduled for 10 September.
