Small area socioeconomic index. 2019

Idescat has published the mall area socioeconomic index (IST) for 2019, which summarises various socioeconomic characteristics of the population resident in a territory and quantifies the differences within Catalonia. The results are provided by census tract groups, which consist of a set of territorially contiguous census tracts with similar socioeconomic characteristics. Each census tract group has between 5,000 and 20,000 inhabitants.

The IST divides Catalonia into 853 census tract groups. There are major differences between the socioeconomic levels of their inhabitants. In 2019, there were 37 groups with an IST that exceeded the Catalan average by more than 25 percentage points; and, at the other extreme, there were 64 with an IST 25 points or more below the average.

Of the 37 groups with the highest socioeconomic level, all but one were in the Metropolitan Area: Barcelona City had 24, Sant Cugat del Vallès 7 and Esplugues de Llobregat, Sabadell, Sant Joan Despí, Sant Just Desvern, Matadepera and Girona City had one. The three groups with the highest IST in Catalonia were as follows: Barcelona 78 (Les Tres Torres) with an IST of 137.5, Barcelona 82 (Can Castelló, Modolell and Can Ballescar) with an IST of 135.8, and Sant Cugat del Vallès 8 (Parc Central - El Colomer - Pla de la Pagesa - Can Majó) with an IST of 135.1.

In contrast, the 64 census tract groups with the lowest socioeconomic level were distributed throughout Catalonia, but there were 4 municipalities that stood out because they had a higher number: L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (7), Santa Coloma de Gramenet (6), Badalona (6) and Barcelona (5). The 3 census tract groups with the lowest socioeconomic status were Salt 3 (Nucli Urbà Nord-oest) with an IST of 34.3, Santa Coloma de Gramenet 13 (El Fondo Alt) with an IST of 51.7 and Badalona 9 (Sant Roc Oest - sector Plaça de Camarón de la Isla) with an IST of 52.0.

The results for the municipality of Barcelona are also provided by the 73 districts in the city, defined by the City Council. In 2019, there were only 3 with an IST 25 percentage points lower than the Catalan average: Ciutat Meridiana (the lowest in the municipality with an IST of 67.0), La Trinitat Vella and Marina del Prat Vermell. At the other extreme, there were 7 districts with an IST that exceeded the Catalan average by more than 25 percentage points: El Putxet i El Farró, La Vila Olímpica del Poblenou, Pedralbes, Sarrià, Sant Gervasi – La Bonanova, Sant Gervasi – Galvany and Les Tres Torres (the highest in the municipality with an IST of 136.2).

The results can be consulted through interactive maps.
