Marriages Statistics. 2023

The number of marriages celebrated in Catalonia in 2023 was 27,068. This figure represents a decrease of 0.1% compared to 2022.

In 2023, the crude nuptiality rate was 3.40 marriages per 1,000 inhabitants. In terms of first marriages, the average age at marriage increased compared to the previous year and came to 37.2 years for men and 35.1 years for women.

The average age of those marrying for the first time increased (0.5 years for men and 0.4 years for women) in 2023 and was highest in L’Alt Pirineu i Aran (38.4 years for men and 36.5 years for women) and the Metropolitan Area (37.5 years for men and 35.6 years for women). Conversely, Ponent had the youngest ages at first marriage (35.8 years for men and 33.3 years for women).

As for the previous marital status of the spouses, 70.9% of marriages were first marriages for both spouses. Likewise, 17.2% were between a person who had been married before and one who hadn’t. Marriages in which both partners had been married before accounted for 11.8% of the total number of marriages.

In terms of the sex of the spouses, 96.1% of marriages (26,016) were between different-sex couples and 3.9% (1,052) between same-sex couples. Of the latter, 459 were between men and 593 between women.

Regarding the nationality of the spouses in different-sex marriages, the majority were marriages between two spouses of Spanish nationality which accounted for 80.1% of the total. By contrast, mixed marriages in which one spouse had foreign nationality and the other Spanish made up 16.5%. Finally, marriages between foreign nationals represented 3.5% of the total.

By areas of the Territorial Plan, the Central Counties and El Penedès recorded the highest nuptiality rates, both with 3.96 marriages per 1,000 inhabitants, while the lowest nuptiality rates were in Ponent (3.11‰) and Les Terres de l'Ebre (3.12‰). By counties, the highest nuptiality rates were recorded in El Solsonès (5.48‰), El Moianès (4.77‰) and El Garraf (4.14‰). Meanwhile, the counties with the lowest nuptiality rates were La Segarra (1.87‰), La Terra Alta (2.44‰) and L’Alt Urgell (2.55‰).

The months with the most weddings were in the summer, especially September (3,759), June (3,561) and July (3,125), except for August which recorded the lowest number of weddings (870); there were also few weddings in January (1,078) and February (1,294).
