CENSPH Population and Housing Census

The Population and Housing Census is the statistical operation that, every ten years, provides a count of the resident population in the territory and its geographical distribution. It also provides information on the main demographic and social characteristics of the population and of households and families.

Territorially, it offers information on a municipal, inter-municipal (census sections, districts and census groupings), county, territorial plan areas, provinces and Catalonia.

The Population and Housing Census is a state-wide statistical operation carried out by the INE, although since 1991 Idescat has been collaborating in different aspects of the census work. The 2011 Census was carried out for the first time by European mandate.

The Population and Housing Census 2021 has not been constructed based on household interviews (as was done in previous censuses) but has been prepared mainly by combining administrative records.

The dissemination of the first results of the Population and Housing Census includes data on population structure, migration, intercensal growth and indicators. During 2023, Idescat plans to publish data on the relationship with economic activity and studies (June), housing (September) and households and families (October).
