Methodological note

The movement of vessels reflects the number of merchant vessels entering each port, regardless of the type of sailing (cabotage or foreign), nationality (Spanish or foreign) or the type of vessel (tanker, bulk carriers, container ships, general cargo, etc.).

Passenger traffic at ports measures the number of people who travel in any type of merchant vessel either entering or leaving the ports for any type of sailing (cabotage or foreign).

Goods traffic in ports includes the tonnes of cargo loaded, unloaded and transshipped in the ports. Cargo includes bulk liquids (oil products, natural gas and other liquids), bulk solids (cement, coal, cereals, minerals, etc.), and general cargo, which is cargo in unit load devices which can be counted (bottled liquids, bagged cement, etc.).

Container traffic includes cargo loaded or unloaded in merchant vessels and produced by any sort of sailing (foreign or cabotage), depending on whether the transported cargo is in containers measuring 20 feet or more.

Data for Catalonia refer to the ports of Barcelona and Tarragona.

The data for this series are provisional. When data for a new period is incorporated, that of the same period of the previous year is revised.
