Methodological note

The Large Store Sales Index is an indicator which makes it possible to monitor a very dynamic commercial sub-sector, namely non-specialist large stores. The results are based on exhaustive information about all the non-specialist large stores operating in Catalonia.

Large stores means commercial establishments with a sales area of more than 2,500 square metres. At present some sixty establishments are included. Turnover is broken down into food and other products.

The INE calculates a large store sales index for Spain as a whole, but using a different methodology, as the INE includes both specialist and non-specialist large stores. This means it is not always possible to make direct comparisons between the results.

The base year of the index is 2015. It has been calculated retrospectively with the new base the whole available series since January 1995.
