Methodological note
The Retail Trade Index (ICD) measures the short-term evolution of the activity of companies in the retail trade sector in Catalonia by means of the turnover variable.
Turnover includes the amounts invoiced by companies for the provision of services and sales of goods, not including indirect taxes, in the performance of its main activity and any secondary activity carried out by the company. It is accounted for on a net basis by deducting sales returns and volume discounts. Cash discounts and discounts for prompt payment are not deducted.
The reference population is companies with activity in Catalonia whose main activity is included in division 47 "Retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles" of the Catalan classification of economic activities (CCAE-2009).
The ICD is carried out monthly and the base period is 2021. It is calculated as a chained Laspeyres index, with information from a continuous monthly survey of companies and weightings referenced to December of the immediately preceding year from the same survey.
In accordance with European standards, the index for January 2024 is the first to be published with this base. The indicators for 2021, 2022 and 2023 have been recalculated from updated samples and the back series has been linked from December 2020 to the beginning in order to maintain the rates of change.
Idescat publishes the ICD for Catalonia at current and constant prices by the following areas, according to the activities of the CCAE-2009:
General index (division 47).
- General index without service stations (division 47, except group 473).
Food (class 4711 and group 472).
Rest of products (class 4719 and groups 474, 475, 476, 477, 478 and 479).
