Methodological note

The Industry Turnover Index (IVNI) is a short-term indicator which measures the short-term evolution of demand in companies operating in the industrial sector in Catalonia by means of the turnover variable. As a value index, it measures the joint evolution of quantities, quality and prices.

Turnover corresponds to the value of the establishment's invoicing for the sale of goods and the provision of industrial services, both by the establishment itself and those from subcontracting with third parties and all charges passed on to the customer (transport, packaging, etc.). VAT and other taxes levied on the operation are excluded, as are sales returns, price reductions, rebates, discounts applied and grants received from public administrations and European Union institutions.

The reference population is establishments in Catalonia whose activity is included in sections B "Mining and quarrying" (except divisions 05, 06 and 09) or C "Manufacturing" of the Catalan classification of economic activities (CCAE -2009).

The IVNI is carried out monthly and the base period is 2021. It is calculated as a fixed base Laspeyres index with information from a continuous monthly survey of establishments and weightings from the Structural Business Statistics in the Industrial Sector for 2021.

In accordance with European standards, the index for January 2024 is the first to be published with this base. The indicators for 2021, 2022 and 2023 have been recalculated and the back series has been linked from December 2020 to the beginning in order to maintain the rates of change.

Idescat publishes the IVNI for Catalonia by the large industrial sectors defined by Commission Regulation (EC) No. 656/2007, except for energy:

  • General index.

  • Index of industrial products (energy is not included, corresponding to division 19).

    Consumer goods.

    Capital goods.

    Intermediate goods.

The indices for the past 13 months are provisional.
