Methodological note

From 1998 to 2020, the source of this information is the Municipal Population Register (1 January of each year). It is an administrative register and each municipality is responsible for its creation, maintenance and management. The data constitutes proof of residence and address in the public domain, which authenticates it for any administrative purpose. Since 1996, it is a permanently updated register, from which official population figures are obtained: the Continuous Population Register.

As of 2021, the source of this information is the Population Census, which is carried out annually by the INE and provides the count of the population residing in the territory and its geographical distribution. It also provides information on the main demographic and social characteristics of the population, households and families.

You can get more information about these statistics in the methodology.
